Tennis Legend Struff Clinches Maiden Title at BMW Open in Germany

Munich, Germany (AP) – In a remarkable achievement, 33-year-old German tennis player Jan-Lennard Struff secured his first career title at the BMW Open on Sunday. Struff defeated American Taylor Fritz 7-5, 6-3 in the final, capping off an impressive run on his home soil.

“To do it on home soil is just incredible,” an elated Struff said. “I waited so long. I’m 33 years old and played so long on tour. It’s just an amazing feeling to do it here in Germany.”

The 28th-ranked Struff had previously fallen short in three previous final appearances, but this time he managed to convert 5 of his 11 break point opportunities against Fritz to claim the victory in 1 hour and 19 minutes.

According to the ATP website, Struff’s triumph makes him the third-oldest first-time champion since the tour was established in 1990, at the age of 33 years and 11 months.

Struff’s path to the title included a dominant 6-2, 6-0 semifinal win over defending champion Holger Rune. Meanwhile, Fritz was playing in his first career tour-level final on clay, having already won one title this season in Delray Beach.

The long-awaited success on home turf is a testament to Struff’s perseverance and dedication to the sport, as he finally breaks through at the age of 33 to claim his maiden ATP title.
