Carlos Alcaraz Approaches Madrid Open with Cautious Optimism
Carlos Alcaraz, the third-ranked Spanish tennis player, is approaching the Madrid Open with cautious optimism as he makes his return from a right arm injury.
Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion of the ATP 1000 tournament, stated that he has trained well in recent days but is not fully confirming his participation just yet. The 20-year-old said he would be happy to play “three or four matches” in his comeback, prioritizing being at 100% for the event in his home country.
“Today I trained with a little more intensity and things went quite well,” Alcaraz said. “I don’t want to say 100% that I’ll play. With the sensations that I have right now, I’d be happy to play three or four matches.”
The young talent is set to face either Alexander Shevchenko or Arthur Rinderknech in the opening round, having received a first-round bye. Alcaraz emphasized the significance of competing at the Madrid Open, where he has a strong support system and a passionate home crowd.
“For me it’s really important to be at 100% here in this tournament,” Alcaraz said. “Playing here is so special. It’s the tournament where a lot of family can come to watch my matches, a lot of friends as well, and for me it’s really special to play in front of my home crowd as well.”
Meanwhile, other top players like Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev are also preparing for the Madrid Open. Sinner, the top seed, will face fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the opening round, while Medvedev, seeded third, will take on either Christopher O’Connell or Matteo Arnaldi.
