The Workday Canberra International: A Thrilling Start to the 2024 Australian Tennis Season

Women’s Singles Final: Parrizas-Diaz Reigns Supreme

The 2024 edition of the Workday Canberra International, Canberra’s premier Tennis tournament, concluded with the crowning of the champions at the Canberra Tennis Centre. This prestigious event, a combined ATP Challenger 125 and WTA 125 tournament, marked the opening of the Australian summer of Tennis.

In the Women’s Singles final, Spanish star Nuria Parrizas-Diaz put on a dominant display, defeating Great Britain’s Harriet Dart in straight sets, 6-4 6-3. Parrizas-Diaz showcased her impressive serving abilities, winning 74% of her first serve points, and complemented it with powerful and accurate groundstrokes, much to the delight of the sold-out centre court crowd in the nation’s capital. The unseeded Parrizas-Diaz had a remarkable tournament, dropping only one set and defeating the 5th and 3rd seeds on her way to lifting the Workday Canberra International trophy.

“I love Australia and it has been a fabulous start to my Australian summer of Tennis. It’s my first time in Canberra, and the people, support and the city have been fantastic,” expressed a delighted Parrizas-Diaz after her triumph.

Men’s Final: Koepfer Clinches the Title

The Men’s Final saw top seed Dominik Koepfer of Germany defeat Czech teenager Jakub Mensik in a convincing 6-3 6-2 victory. Koepfer, known for his solid play from both wings and pinpoint accuracy, proved too strong for the rising star Mensik, breaking serve on three occasions. Koepfer’s impressive performances throughout the week, including an outstanding display in his quarterfinal win over David Goffin, made him a firm favourite with the enthusiastic fans.

“It’s been amazing how the community showed up every day, every night, and the stands were full. It’s so much fun to play in front of a lot of people, especially at a Challenger event, which is not normal,” said an elated Koepfer.

A Successful and Engaging Event

The Workday Canberra International, which offered an increased prize pool of USD$320,000 and enhanced ATP and WTA ranking points, saw a strong international presence, with 142 competitors from over 40 countries participating in the event.

Tournament Director, Lawrence Robertson, was thrilled with the success of the event, stating, “Over the past week, we have had the chance to see some of the greats of Tennis up close, with Aussie favourites and many of the world’s next generation of superstars. The response we’ve had from the Canberra public to come out and support the Workday Canberra International has been fantastic, and we’ve seen record crowds come and sample not only world-class Tennis but the very best of local food and beverages.”

Tennis ACT CEO, Mark La Brooy, echoed Robertson’s sentiments, highlighting the thriving state of Tennis in the ACT and the region. “The past week has been a fantastic display of world-class Tennis.
